What are VOC's in Paint?

VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) have been found in interior paint for many years. The number generally accepted for a low-VOC paint is less than 50 grams per liter; a zero-VOC paint has fewer than 5 grams per liter. (All Devine Color products are less than 50). Low levels of toxic emissions are not only released during painting, but in many cases VOC's will continue to be released in the air for years to come. Some of these Volatile Organic Compounds include formaldehyde, ammonia, and acetone just to name a few. In addition, biocides and fungicides are sometimes added to extend shelf life and inhibit mildew growth even though they could potentially omit gases for years. For people with allergies or chemical sensitivities, being in a freshly painted room and breathing the omissions from VOC's can really make for a bad day. These volatile organic compounds can continue to irritate you for years after painting.
